How to Compress a PDF Without Losing Quality
Large PDF files are hard to share by email, slow to upload, and take up unnecessary storage. This guide explains how to reduce PDF file size for free using PDFyre — entirely in your browser, with no file uploads.
When Does PDF Compression Actually Help?
PDF compression works by re-rendering each page as a JPEG image at a reduced resolution and quality. This is highly effective for one type of PDF and ineffective for another:
- Scanned PDFs — Great candidates. These are already images inside a PDF wrapper. Compressing them can reduce size by 40–80% with minimal visible quality loss.
- Image-heavy PDFs — Good candidates. Brochures, presentations, photo books all benefit significantly.
- Text-only PDFs — Not ideal. If your PDF was created from a Word document or typed directly, it stores text as vector data which is already very compact. Re-rendering it as JPEG images will actually make it larger, not smaller.

Drop or select your PDF
Click the drop zone to select your PDF. The file size and page count will be shown immediately.
Choose a compression level
Start with Balanced. If the output is still too large, try Aggressive. For high-quality prints or archives, use Light.
Click Compress PDF
Processing takes a few seconds to a few minutes depending on page count. A progress bar shows current status.
Review and download
The results screen shows original size vs compressed size and percentage reduction. Click Download Compressed PDF if you are satisfied.
